BE-FAST - Signs of strokes to be aware of

A stroke is not only a severe medical emergency but the second leading cause of death worldwide. It is also a leading cause of disability across the globe.

B (BALANCE): When a patient suddenly loses balance, feels dizzy, has a severe headache, or loses the ability to coordinate movements.

E (EYESIGHT): Indicates blurry vision or complete loss of vision in one or both eyes.

F (FACE): Facial changes, such as facial drooping, a crooked smile, and uneven facial expressions, especially when the patient smiles or opens their mouth wide.

A (ARM): The patient has difficulty or is unable to move their arm or leg, experiences numbness, or has weakness on one side of the body.

S (SPEECH): The patient has difficulty speaking, slurred speech, unclear pronunciation, difficulty pronouncing words, or abnormal speech. You can check this by asking the person suspected of having a stroke to repeat a simple sentence you just said.

T (TIME): Time to call for ambulance or go to an emergency department that treats strokes immediately.
